Cake, Cancer & Coffee Group

Who Are We?

We are a group of people from Stowmarket and surrounding areas who have been affected by cancer. We include friends, family and carers, as well as people who have been diagnosed themselves.

We arrange pub lunches and group trips in addition to our monthly meetings at Red Gables. There is no set format to our meetings. When new members join we sometimes introduce ourselves and tell a little of our stories but this is always optional – some people find it helpful, others prefer to get to know us a little first and open up gradually. It’s good to talk. It can be very isolating to try to cope with a recent diagnosis when no one around you has similar experience and you might not want to confide your fears in those closest to you. We are not medically trained but we can listen.

If you have cancer, have had cancer, have a friend or relative with cancer or care for someone with cancer, please do join us here at Red Gables. You will be made very welcome.

What We Do

We Offer Support

On the first Sunday of every month, we meet for cake, coffee and a chat at Red Gables in Stowmarket from 3-5pm.

We Socialise

We meet for pub lunches every two months, usually on a Sunday. We also arrange group trips in the summer months and are hoping to build a regular commuinity group.

Why can it help?

Because it’s good to talk – it can help to relieve the pressure of coping alone. It can be very isolating to try to cope with a scary diagnosis when no one around you has a similar experience and you might not want to confide your fears in those closest to you. Many people find it very helpful to tell the story of their experience and share their worries about future options. We are not medically trained but we can listen, and this can sometimes help people realise which questions are most important to ask their doctors when they next meet.

Helping Beat Cancer

Raising money for Cancer Research UK as part of a 24 hour walking relay can be a great way to get to know each other and begin to feel that we re contributing to something worthwhile. We have taken part in Relay for Life in July since 2017 as Cake Club Zappers.

We also take part in Macmillan Coffee Mornings and sometimes raise money for the St Elizabeth Hospice.
